About Dr. Kumar

Anirudh Kumar, MD, MPH is a fellowship-trained, board-certified Pulmonary & Critical Care physician at Long Beach Medical Center. He primarily does intensivist work and takes joy in teaching and supervising the University of California – Irvine (UCI) medical residents and strives to bring high quality critical care to Southern California’s diverse communities. His clinical interests include ultrasound/POCUS, pleural pathology, and RV failure/pulmonary hypertension.

He received his medical degree and Master’s in Public Health from the Icahn School of Medicine. He then completed his residency in Internal Medicine (Primary Care) at NYU/Bellevue and fellowship in Pulmonary & Critical Care at University of California Los Angeles (UCLA).

Dr. Kumar is passionate about furthering the health equity movement and has expertise in health systems design, Community Health Workers (CHWs), and pulmonary rehabilitation. Dr. Kumar has co-authored several peer-reviewed publications including publications focused on standardizing and measuring outcomes in CHW-led chronic disease management as well as the development of virtual pulmonary rehabilitation as a viable model for lung rehabilitation care. He has worked with and studied protocols for marginalized populations both domestically in East Harlem, NY and abroad in India (Comprehensive Rural Health Project), Nepal (Possible), Kenya (AMPATH), and Botswana (Botswana-Harvard AIDS Institute Partnership).

Dr. Kumar is currently the Principal Investigator for a mixed-methods study characterizing the disparities in interhospital patient transfer rates among different demographic groups and healthcare facilities in Los Angeles (LA) County and the state of California in his health policy research capacity at the Los Angeles Department for Public Health. Dr. Kumar was also nominated Fellow of the Year at UCLA multiple times during his fellowship and graduated medical school as a Dean’s Scholar in Global Health, completing funded research and extra training in global health.

In his free time, Dr. Kumar loves to run, bike, hike/camp, and spend as much time as he can enjoying Southern California’s beautiful weather and beaches.
